What would the Internet look like without hackers ? What would computing look like without free and open source software ? What would the culture look like with DRM and closed media channels everywhere ? Where do art and technology merge ?
Many questions will be debated during the first Hacker Space Fest from the 16th to the 22nd June 2008 near Paris, in the industrial outskirts of Vitry-sur-Seine (/tmp/lab).
I'm really happy to be in this festival about hacking. I'll participate in different ways :

Last month I've spent one week in Nancy in the
Atelier de Recherche Typographique (located in my old school of art) to work with very nice people on a p2p & collaborative based project :
InOut, initiated by the
CiTu.

The idea is very simple : each artist or searcher present in this workshop came with an idea of an installation which needs some INs, exploits it, and then gives some OUTs (sound, video, or data). The installations are all connected together. The whole system exchanges are made in p2p, and the connections are reconfigurated when the needs change, so each work has to survive in a kind of organic system where data are like fluids.
This project isn't autistic, so there is a global monitoring system, and each piece has to offer an interface, or at less something to see.
With
Emilie, we proposed a project without any interface, a kind of tempo tapper using inherent feedbacks of the system, and only visible in the other works because of the rythm of its impulsions. We'd like to create some choregraphies of connections.
It was a very nice week, as you maybe can't see with this freaky patchwork :)

It was only the first workshop ; we just started to define together all the protocols of the system. I'll tell you more about it later.

I've just finished a first version of a new
project realized with
Emilie Brout :
the Road Between us.
It's a work between net-art, ready-made
2.0, social hacking & geolocalization.
The road between us exploits the proliferation of geo-localized images on
Flickr, constructing fictitious journeys from the position of these images on the world-wide territory. These routes will be integrated like real traces in the already existing multitude.
Our program allows you to choose a place on earth where you want to find a route. In this area, it selects a first shot at random. From that image, it then determines the closest photo, and draws the link that connects them. It continues like this until there are no longer pictures nearby.

You can then view the route, the photographs that make it up (one by one or in a slideshow), as well as the avatars and the names of the authors of these images.
The route is also exported to a KML file, viewable in
Google Maps or
Google Earth.

Once the trails recorded, we send an email to the authors of the photos, thanking them for
their participation in this wonderful ride :) We send it to everyone in claiming to be the others, being as a server waiting for the results of these exchanges.
Although they've traveled into the same spaces, the authors don't know each other, and find themselves forced against their will to remember a ride they haven't done.
Faced with these routes that are as micro-narratives, we personally have a hard time imagining that they haven't been together.
The road between us can too be viewed in physical installation :

We're working right now to adapt the program into a web application, so that everyone can create its own routes. The app was built with
Processing, using the
proXML library. Flickr offers the use of its databases with this
API.

Oops, I pointed out that I didn't post anything for three months !
Shame on me :/
There are several reasons for this : I'm not fallen into a coma, but I moved to Paris, where I started to work in the CSRCI (a kind of hypermedias lab), which has just started in the
ENSAD (the oldest school of fine arts in France, like says the director).
My axis (about locative medias) was initiated by Jean-François Depelsenaire and
Jean-Louis Boissier, notorious for his research into interactivity, algorithmic cinema, and a great book (the first I've read about new medias :') "
La relation comme forme." For the moment, the lab is setting up ; I'll certainly speak about it later.
Otherwise, I'm also working on a project that may take some time to achieve, and which I prefer to write about later. And the
RaMonSho project is almost completed :) With
Emilie, we'll put images online as soon as possible. We think that we'll adapt it for Nintendo DS in the future.

Currently I'm working with
Emilie Brout on a nice algorithmic cinema project based on the movie
Rashomon of Kurosawa (public domain). It's between a video game and an interactive system of montage.
Simple but not simplistic : a murder and a rape happened in medieval Japan. You have to find the truth - but is it really possible ?
We separated each plan of the film, and gave some attributes to it (which character can we see ? does he walk to the left ? to the right ?...)
With a classic joypad, you can control each movement of your character. When you meet someone, you can select him (there are four different characters in our game) or you can ask a question to find informations ; when it's allowed, you can fight with the action button (and the joypad rumbles); or you can simply watch beautiful landscapes if you want.
We chose this movie because there are a lot of narrative possibilities : the facts are recounted in four different versions. It's also a homage to Kurosawa. What a pleasure to walk for hours in its endless forest !
The software uses the
proControll library for processing. More informations soon :)
